Twenty plant-based smoothies in five groups, so you can go straight to the one that matches the morning.

Calories are next to each, because smoothies range from 99 to over 700 and the glass looks the same either way.

One is ours. Where a recipe lists dairy yogurt or honey we have said so with the swap.

Fruity and refreshing

Frozen fruit and liquid. Nothing else needed and nothing else in them.

1. Banana Watermelon Smoothie

Banana Watermelon SmoothiePin

Three ingredients and three minutes. Watermelon, half a banana, ice.

Ninety-nine calories, which is the lightest thing on this page by a distance.

Get the recipe from The Littlest Crumb.

2. Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Strawberry Banana SmoothiePin

Banana, six strawberries and soy milk. That is the whole recipe.

Eight minutes, makes two at 107 calories each. The one to give a child who is suspicious of green things.

Get the recipe from Oh My Food Recipes.

3. Peach Strawberry Mango Smoothie

Peach Strawberry Mango SmoothiePin

Three frozen fruits and almond milk, five minutes, 139 calories.

Peach is the one people forget to freeze, and it is what makes this taste like summer rather than like every other smoothie.

Get the recipe from Dinners Done Quick.

4. Mango Smoothie

Mango SmoothiePin

Two cups of frozen mango with mango juice, so it is mango three ways and unapologetic about it.

Five minutes, 399 calories. It calls for mango yogurt, so use a plant one or leave it out and add more frozen mango.

Get the recipe from So Smoothie.

Creamy and rich

These use tofu, cashews or cooked sweet potato for body. They are closer to a meal than a drink, and the calorie counts show it.

5. Raspberry Banana Smoothie Bowl

Raspberry Banana Smoothie BowlPin

Ours, and thick enough to eat with a spoon rather than drink.

Frozen raspberry and banana with nothing else sweetening it. Use less liquid than feels right.

6. Banana Cacao Smoothie

Banana Cacao SmoothiePin

Four ingredients. Almond milk, a frozen banana, one medjool date and a teaspoon of cacao.

252 calories and the date is the only sweetener. This is the chocolate one to make on a weekday.

Get the recipe from Yum Vegan Lunch Ideas.

7. Creamy Persimmon Smoothie

Creamy Persimmon SmoothiePin

Two ripe Fuyu persimmons with oat milk, cinnamon, coconut and chia. Persimmon is a short season and this is the reason to use it.

Five minutes, makes two at 284 calories. They must be properly ripe or it will be astringent.

Get the recipe from My Chef’s Apron.

8. Sweet Potato Smoothie

Sweet Potato SmoothiePin

A cup of cooked sweet potato with frozen banana, nut butter and pumpkin spice.

537 calories, so this is breakfast rather than a drink alongside one. Cooked sweet potato makes a smoothie thicker than any fruit will.

Get the recipe from A Virtual Vegan.

9. Lemon Cheesecake Smoothie

Lemon Cheesecake SmoothiePin

A whole lemon including the peel, with cashews, dates and frozen cauliflower. The turmeric is only there for the color.

604 calories. Frozen cauliflower in a sweet smoothie sounds wrong and disappears completely.

Get the recipe from A Virtual Vegan.

10. Chocolate Peanut Butter Tofu Smoothie

Chocolate Peanut Butter Tofu SmoothiePin

Eight ounces of silken tofu with peanut butter, hemp seeds and cocoa. It is the richest thing here at 707 calories.

Silken tofu makes it creamy without tasting of anything, which is exactly what you want from it.

Get the recipe from Zardy Plants.

Green ones

Spinach and arugula disappear behind frozen fruit. Kale does not, so these use the milder leaves on purpose.

11. Arugula Smoothie with Avocado

Arugula Smoothie with AvocadoPin

Arugula rather than spinach, with frozen pineapple and half an avocado. The pineapple is what covers the pepperiness.

Makes four at 129 calories. It offers maple syrup or honey, so take the maple.

Get the recipe from Champagne Tastes.

12. Minty Green Avocado Smoothie

Minty Green Avocado SmoothiePin

Coconut water, spinach, kiwi, lime, fresh mint, avocado and a granny smith apple.

Makes four. Fresh mint is what separates this from every other green smoothie, so do not use dried.

Get the recipe from Foodess.

13. Avocado Fruit Smoothie

Avocado Fruit SmoothiePin

Half an avocado with banana, spinach and frozen mango. 406 calories.

There is a scoop of vanilla protein powder in the original, which you can leave out without changing much beyond the protein.

Get the recipe from Sunglow Kitchen.

14. Spinach and Pineapple Smoothie

Spinach and Pineapple SmoothiePin

Two cups of spinach against frozen pineapple, apple juice and lime. 212 calories.

It lists natural yoghurt, so choose a plant one. Pineapple and lime together will hide almost any quantity of spinach.

Get the recipe from My Goodness Kitchen.

15. Simple Green Smoothie

Simple Green SmoothiePin

Frozen banana, baby spinach, nut butter and frozen cauliflower, which is the trick that makes it thick without more banana.

Makes two at 195 calories. Use any plant milk, and the protein powder is optional.

Get the recipe from Haute and Healthy Living.

Higher in protein

Peanut butter, hemp seeds and pistachios rather than powder, in two of the three.

16. Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana SmoothiePin

Banana, soy milk, cocoa, peanut butter and two tablespoons of hemp seeds. No powder anywhere.

Five minutes, 502 calories. Soy milk carries more protein than any other plant milk, which is why it is specified.

Get the recipe from Health My Lifestyle.

17. Pistachio Banana Smoothie

Pistachio Banana SmoothiePin

A quarter cup of pistachios with two frozen bananas, spinach, frozen cauliflower and chia.

Makes two at 397 calories. Pistachios are an unusual smoothie nut and they give it a color nothing else does.

Get the recipe from Avocado Skillet.

18. Peanut Butter Cup Protein Smoothie

Peanut Butter Cup Protein SmoothiePin

Frozen butternut squash and banana with peanut butter and three tablespoons of cocoa.

Frozen squash is the surprise here. It gives the volume that would otherwise take a third banana.

Get the recipe from Strength and Sunshine.

Two that are not like the others

19. Orange and Beet Smoothie

Orange and Beet SmoothiePin

Cooked beetroot with orange juice, lemon and mint. The color alone is worth it.

Makes two. There are fifteen grams of honey in it, so use maple syrup, or none at all if the oranges are sweet.

Get the recipe from Chef’s Pencil.

20. Strawberry Matcha Smoothie

Strawberry Matcha SmoothiePin

Matcha with strawberries, banana, pineapple and spinach. It layers green and pink if you blend them separately.

Ten minutes, 381 calories. The protein powder is listed as one serving and is easy to skip.

Get the recipe from The Healthful Ideas.

Making any smoothie thicker

Frozen cauliflower and frozen butternut squash both turn up on this list, and both add volume for almost no calories and no flavor.

Freeze bananas the moment they go spotty. A smoothie made with fresh banana and ice is a different, worse drink.

And, always, seek health consciously.
